The Big Sur International Marathon was established in 1986 and today is managed by a 12-person Governance Board of the non-profit Big Sur Marathon Foundation.

Over the course of the last three decades, the Foundation added the Monterey Bay Half Marathon (2003), Run in the Name of Love (2013), and the Salinas Valley Half Marathon (2015) to its family of events. The Salinas Valley Half Marathon was discontinued following the 2018 race. The Run in the Name of Love was discontinued following the 2019 edition.

The race events are managed year round by two full-time staff, a contractor team, a 90-person Events Committee, and over 2,000 community volunteers.

The Mission Statement of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation reads:

The Big Sur Marathon Foundation creates beautiful running events that promote health and benefit our community.
