The Big Sur International Marathon was established in 1986 and today is managed by a 15-person Governance Board of the nonprofit Big Sur Marathon Foundation.

Over the course of the last three decades, the Foundation added the Monterey Bay Half Marathon (2003), Run in the Name of Love (2013), and the Salinas Valley Half Marathon (2015) to its family of events. The Salinas Valley Half Marathon was discontinued following the 2018 race. The Run in the Name of Love was discontinued following the 2019 edition.

The race events are managed year-round by three full-time staff, an incredibly contracted operations team, a 90-person Events Committee, and over 2000 community volunteers.

The Mission Statement of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation reads:

The Mission of the Big Sur Marathon is to enrich and empower our community through charitable giving and to inspire a passion for healthy lifestyles by creating memorable running experiences.
